Aero 360°: The New Orbea Orca Aero

Professional cycling is faster than ever, average speeds in the peloton continue to impress, and equipment specialization has become non-negotiable. In this context, the new Orca Aero arrives as the fastest and most efficient bike-rider system, transferring every watt of pure power in the most effective way possible.

At the heart of the project is a key concept: the Total System Approach. Designing a fast frame in isolation is no longer enough; success depends on how the bicycle interacts with the rider in motion.

Evolving an Ultra-Fast Machine

Orbea was not starting from scratch. The previous generation Orca Aero (2022) was already one of the fastest bikes in the peloton, earning numerous victories in the World Tour and National Championships with the Lotto-Intermarché team. However, Orbea's Innovation and Development team wanted to challenge the limits of physics through a meticulous process—combining wind tunnel prototypes, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, velodrome testing, and extensive road testing. The goal was not simply to create a new frame, but a complete bike-rider system.

1. A New Perspective on Aerodynamics

The pursuit of maximum aerodynamic gains led engineers to optimize every section of the frame millimeter by millimeter, significantly reducing drag in key zones:

  • Head Tube: Designed to be as narrow and sharp as possible while accommodating a standard steerer tube, reducing frontal area without relying on complex solutions.

  • Fork: Optimized to integrate seamlessly with the downtube regardless of tyre width or wind yaw angle.

  • Downtube: A wider downtube profile manages airflow more efficiently, working in conjunction with new aero bottle cages to enhance efficiency.

  • Seat Tube: Features a slimmer profile than the previous generation, reducing drag while maintaining structural efficiency.

  • Seatstays: Thinner seatstays with a lower attachment point optimize the stiffness-to-weight ratio while providing necessary vertical compliance.

  • Bottom Bracket Area: Features a newly developed keel structure that manages airflow through a critical transition area to reduce drag.

Integrated Aero Components:

  • Flush Bottle Cages: Specifically designed bottle cages positioned as low as possible merge with the updated downtube profile to improve overall system aerodynamics.

  • Service Box: Acts as an aerodynamic fairing to improve overall performance while providing practical storage for essential ride spares.

  • OC RA10 Handlebar: An exceptionally lightweight integrated carbon handlebar featuring fully internal cable routing and outstanding stiffness.

  • OC RA11 Aero Seatpost: Minimizes the gap between rider and frame to reduce drag.

Wind Tunnel Verdict: Frame drag reduction results in a direct saving of 5.1 watts at 50 km/h across all wind yaw angles.

2. Faster Together: Rider Position Optimization

A bike that is fast in the wind tunnel alone is not enough; the rider must also be considered to reduce the combined CdA (Coefficient of Aerodynamic Drag).

  • Lowest Bottom Bracket Drop: Featuring a 78 mm bottom bracket drop (the lowest on the market), the lower rider position improves stability and control at high speeds while directly reducing frontal area exposed to the wind.

  • Extensive Cockpit Fit: Offers 13 different handlebar sizes, up to 40 mm of stem spacers, two seatpost offset options (0–15 mm and 15–25 mm), and a reversible clamp to help every rider find their ideal fit.

  • OQUO RA57 LTD Wheels: Enhance responsiveness and power transfer.

Real-World Impact: Positioning the rider in a more stable and aerodynamic posture saves approximately 14 watts at 50 km/h on flat terrain, bringing the total system saving to 21 watts over the previous model.

3. Ready for Future Standards

  • Generous Tyre Clearance: Accommodates tyres up to 37 mm (maintaining full aerodynamic performance between 29 mm and 35 mm), which saves 6–7 watts at 40 km/h on cobbles or rough roads by reducing vibration losses.

  • Climbing Bike Stiffness: Delivers 93 Nm/° stiffness at a competitive frame weight of around 900 g, saving approximately 2 watts at 17 km/h on an 8% climb compared to the previous generation.

  • Modern Integration: Designed exclusively for electronic drivetrains with Di2 integration through the bottom bracket area, universal UDH derailleur hanger compatibility, and a 90° Spinblock steering limiter.

Ultimately, Orbea has created a complete bike-rider system engineered for the Grand Tours and sprint finishes of the future.
